Summit the highest mountain in the Westfjords!
The Westfjords are characterized by many mountains but none of them
particularly high. Most of them are flat on the top, a sign of glacier
erosion from the last Ice age. But real peaks can be found and most of
them are concentrated on the peninsula between the big fjords of
Dyrafjordur and Arnarfjordur. This area is called the Westfjord's Alps
because of the resemblance to its European big brother. The highest
peak is Mt. Kaldbakur 998 meters (it reaches 1000 meters if you stand
on top of the cairn!).
We drive from Ísafjörður to our starting point in Kirkjubolsdalur
valley (1 hour) and walk into the valley and slowly make our way up the
hillside, following a ridge that leads to the top. The last part of the
route is a bit steeper but the ground is firm and good to walk on. From
the top we get a panoramic view of most of the Westfjords. On a clear
day we can even see Snaefellsjokull glacier to the South. We follow the
same way down and then drive back to Ísafjörður.
